What are cannabinoids?
When people hear the word cannabinoids, for most, the first thing that springs to mind is cannabis. And although it is true that the phytocannabinoids (phyto=plant) found in abundance in the cannabis plant are the most well-known, there is also another class of cannabinoids.
These are called endocannabinoids (endo=inside), and are cannabinoids produced by your own body, and they play an important part in keeping our bodies happy and healthy (you can read more about it here).
What is CBD?
CBD, short for cannabidiol, is one type of phytocannabinoid commonly found in the cannabis plant. CBD is a safe, non-addictive, non-intoxicating cannabinoid. CBD is also one of the most researched of all the cannabinoids with an ever increasing body of scientific research showing that it has a wide range of potential beneficial properties and therapeutic uses.
What is the Endocannabinoid System?
The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is your body’s very own cannabinoid producing system and made up of a complex system of cannabinoid receptors, endocannabinoids and metabolic enzymes.
The ECS is the body’s universal regulator and it’s main job is to help keep your body in homeostasis or a state of balance so that it can function at its best. The ECS is also responsible for regulating different physiological processes such as sleep, mood, appetite, memory, immune responses, and fertility. If you’re interested in finding out more about how your ECS works, you can read more about it here.

The short answer is no. CBD has repeatedly been shown to be incredibly safe, even in high dosages. In fact, there hasn’t been even one report of anybody overdosing on CBD.
Are there side-effects from taking CBD?
As with anything else we put in our bodies, and due to the fact that everyone’s endocannabinoid system functions uniquely some people might not do that well on CBD and may experience some mild side-effects. If you feel that you are experiencing any negative side-effects, dial back your dose a little until you feel better and consult your physician.
Avoid CBD if your medications have a grapefruit warning on the label. This is because certain constituents in grapefruit known as furanocoumarins inhibit the CYP3A4 enzyme, in a similar fashion as CBD. The result is a slowed metabolization of certain medications.
Keep in mind that this does not apply to topical CBD products, like lotions and salves as you do not ingest them. Topicals don’t typically enter the bloodstream, therefore will not affect you the same way as ingesting CBD.
